BETHPAGE, N.Y. — How do you solve a problem like following up NBC’s The Sound of Music?
Last December’s telecast, the first live presentation of a Broadway musical on television in nearly six decades, drew a jaw-dropping 21.3 million viewers. But reviews were mixed, particularly for leading lady Carrie Underwood, as many critics and viewers were underwhelmed by the country-pop star’s acting chops.
For their second project in this vein, Peter Pan Live! (Dec. 4, 8 p.m. ET/PT), NBC and executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron chose Allison Williams (a star of HBO’s Girls, and daughter of NBC Nightly News anchor Brian), a rising but lesser-known actress who has loved musical theater for as long as she can remember.
