What’s harder to believe: that the Downton Abbey fire brigade responds to conflagrations within minutes, or just how lucky Thomas Barrow is when it comes to getting himself out of tight spots via well-timed heroics?
Or perhaps the more pertinent question is this: just how does “Downton Abbey”creator/writer Julian Fellowes and its skilled cast manage to draw us in, season after season, even when the plot twists are preposterous, the head of the Crawley family seems resolutely planted on the wrong side of history, and we begin each episode by looking at a dog’s hindquarters?
Sunday night’s “Downton Abbey” season 5 premiere was a buoyant bounce-back from last season’s lows, and a crisp collection of the show’s lovable, silly, funny traits.
And yes, spoilers are coming, so if you haven’t yet watched and want to be surprised, you know what to do.
